If you’ve ever wished you could step into the world of Practical Magic, you’re not alone. Since its release in 1998, the movie has captivated audiences with its story of love, mystery, and witchcraft. But the Owens family’s captivating home—a sprawling, Gothic, Victorian-inspired sanctuary—became an unexpected star of the film and a source of endless inspiration for design enthusiasts.

The Spellbinding Story of the “Practical Magic” House

Based on Alice Hoffman’s novel, Practical Magic tells the story of the Owens family, who, despite their supernatural abilities, are plagued by a curse that prevents them from finding true love. And while Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, and Dianne Wiest brought life to this tale of magic and family, their on-screen home became an iconic symbol of warmth, charm, and timeless design.

Nestled in a fictional Massachusetts town, the Owens family house serves as a refuge, a family gathering space, and a critical location for many of the film’s key scenes. This house—filled with personality and an endless array of quirky, eclectic items—has inspired countless fans to recreate its moody magic in their own homes.

Building the Practical Magic House: A Labor of Love

The creative duo behind this cinematic masterpiece, designers Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch of Roman and Williams, shared how they approached building a home that felt both lived-in and enchanted. Tasked by the director, Griffin Dunne, to bring the Owens family residence to life, Standefer and Alesch designed the Gothic-inspired exterior on San Juan Island, Washington—a long way from the film’s East Coast setting.

Standefer and Alesch spent six months crafting the home’s exterior, finding inspiration in Victorian architecture, East Coast lighthouses, and intricate 19th-century scrollwork. The process wasn’t just about constructing a set but creating a space that felt as if it had seen generations of memories.

The pair explained that each item in the house was chosen with intent, creating what they described as a “cabinet of curiosities.” The interior decor was meticulously assembled in Los Angeles, using flea market finds, antiques, and one-of-a-kind treasures from around the world. From pressed flowers to tincture jars and vintage knick-knacks, every piece contributed to the illusion of a home filled with history, mystery, and love.

The Famous Kitchen That Became a Design Obsession

Standefer and Alesch had a special fondness for one room in particular: the kitchen. Inspired by grand English kitchens, they focused on creating a space that felt both grand and inviting—a place where the family’s heart and history would come alive. The adjoining glass conservatory, seen in scenes throughout the movie, became one of the film’s most beloved backdrops.

To this day, clients still ask Standefer and Alesch to recreate the movie’s kitchen and conservatory, illustrating the lasting impact of their vision.

Why You Can’t Buy the Practical Magic House

The charm of the Practical Magic house captured the imagination of fans worldwide, including the famous singer Barbra Streisand, who called Standefer and Alesch asking if she could purchase the house after the film’s release. Unfortunately, the house was just a set, built specifically for the film, and was deconstructed after shooting wrapped. While it left fans disappointed, the good news is that the inspiration of the Practical Magic house lives on—and perhaps, with a sequel on the horizon, there’s a chance for this magical home to make a comeback.

Bringing the Spirit of the Practical Magic House Into Your Own Home

While the original house may be gone, you can bring the essence of the Owens family home into your own life. Here’s how:

1. Embrace Vintage Finds: Look for antiques, flea market treasures, and items with character. The Owens home was all about layering history, so choose items that speak to you and tell a story.

2. Create a “Cabinet of Curiosities”: Fill shelves with unique items like pressed flowers, glass bottles, and eclectic knick-knacks. The goal is to make your space feel lived-in and a little mysterious.

3. Design with Moody Colors and Gothic Inspiration: Dark, rich colors—such as deep greens, browns, and purples—combined with Victorian-style furniture can instantly bring a touch of Practical Magic to any room.

4. Make Your Kitchen a Heartfelt Gathering Place: If you’re enchanted by the film’s iconic kitchen, consider adding open shelving, vintage jars, and warm wood tones to your own kitchen space. Creating a sense of warmth and tradition is key.

With a few intentional design choices, you can bring a touch of Practical Magic into your own home, creating a space that feels personal, timeless, and a little bit enchanted.
